What I Learned From: Journaling

I was absolutely one of those people who couldn’t stand writing things down—especially not my feelings. In high school and college, I was always looking for ways to avoid any serious writing or researching. But here I am now, writing blogs and finding that, for me, blogging has become a powerful form of journaling. Ironic, right?

Blogging as a Form of Journaling

Blogging has turned out to be one of the best ways for me to express my thoughts and share my experiences. In my opinion, blogging is a type of journaling—it’s about honesty, storytelling, and reflecting on what’s happening inside and around me. With each blog post, I’m documenting moments, ideas, and emotions that I might’ve once kept bottled up. This process has made me realize just how freeing it is to put my thoughts into words.

Facing My Truths Through Journaling

Journaling allowed me to be honest with myself about things I’d been holding onto for, well, almost my entire life—and I’m only 29. Writing has taken me back to the younger version of myself, helping me reconnect to little Jordan and heal those moments that have stuck with me. I’ve been able to guide myself through painful memories I was unconsciously carrying and give them a space to release.

How often do we stop to ask ourselves: what am I holding onto? Who is the real “me” underneath all these years of experience?

Confronting Fear and Embracing My True Self

As I journaled, I noticed a pattern—I’d been masking who I really was to fit the expectations of others. I was afraid: afraid of being alone, afraid of judgment, afraid of what would happen if I let my real self show. Journaling became a safe space to confront those fears and helped me begin to understand that my worth isn’t defined by others’ opinions. It was like giving myself permission to shine, unapologetically.

If you’re reading this and feeling like you’ve been hiding parts of yourself, have you ever thought about why that might be? What would it look like to let your true self out?

Finding Power and Presence

By getting into the habit of journaling, I’ve been able to be more in the moment, not as consumed by worrying or overthinking what’s coming next. I’ve taken back a sense of power over my own mind and my decisions. It’s helped me to stop being so easily influenced by others’ opinions. This, I believe, comes from getting to know and befriend myself on a deeper level.

Are you feeling caught up in overthinking? Maybe it’s time to try just writing it down—no filters, no pressure.

A Note to You

If there’s one thing I could tell anyone feeling stuck in their mind, it’s this: just write. Grab a pen, a notebook, or even your phone, and let your thoughts flow. Journaling is a tool that helps bring you out of your mind and into your body, into the present moment, where real growth happens.

Curious to try? Maybe journaling can be the release or clarity you didn’t know you needed. And if you enjoyed reading, don’t forget to check out the rest of my blog and subscribe to stay updated!
